Mrs. Onyx teaches in a one-room school in the undercity, the only school for forty blocks in any direction, and most mornings she is the only teacher in it.

In S01E03, The Teacher, she speaks on the record about the number the city will not say out loud: eighty-five percent of her children do not finish, and most of those end up in the gangs or dead. She talks about the teachers who came down from the city proper and never went home, about the chalk and secondhand books she buys with her own money, and about her husband, a Lawjack killed in the line of duty, whose death compensation ran out in fourteen months.

Digital Doom checked her words against the city’s own census and ledgers. They hold up. She is still standing in the room, and she says some of them are called to it.
